The Dominican Republic hosts two of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean — Amber Cove (Puerto Plata, north coast) and La Romana (south-east coast, 45 minutes from Punta Cana) — plus the smaller Casa de Campo Marina which handles luxury lines. Combined, they welcome over 1.6 million cruise passengers per year, most on 7- to 10-hour port calls that end with the all-aboard whistle at 4 or 5 p.m.

Typical port call: 09:00 arrival, 17:00 all-aboard. The terminal itself has pools, zip-lines and shops — you can stay onboard the pier area all day if you want. But the region's headline experiences (27 Charcos de Damajagua waterfalls, Ocean World, Fort San Felipe, Playa Dorada) are 15–40 minutes away.
La Romana (Casa de Campo area): south-east coast, mostly served by Costa, MSC, Celebrity and occasional Royal Caribbean itineraries. Typical port call: 08:00–17:00. The star attraction is 45 minutes away: Saona Island, which departs directly from nearby Bayahibe — a 20-minute drive from the cruise terminal. This is the port where "shore excursion = Saona Island" is the honest answer 8 times out of 10.
Casa de Campo Marina: luxury boutique port handling Silversea, Oceania, Seabourn, Regent. Same excursion catalog as La Romana; different pickup point. Everything below applies with a shorter transfer to Bayahibe.
Ranked by how often we run them for cruise guests specifically, factoring in the strict all-aboard window and the transfer time back to the ship. These are the ones we personally guarantee will get you back on time.
From La Romana or Casa de Campo, the answer is almost always Saona Island. It's a protected national-park island 45 minutes south by speedboat from Bayahibe (20 min drive from the cruise terminal). You get four beaches, the Palmilla Natural Pool (starfish in chest-deep turquoise water), a Dominican buffet lunch on Mano Juan, and back to the ship by 15:30 — well inside the all-aboard window.
2026 price: from US$95 per person (cruise-passenger version, includes terminal pickup, express transfer, small-group speedboat, lunch, open bar, national park fee). Compare that to US$149–189 for the ship's version of the same tour — same island, larger boats, later return, roughly double the price.
Only book the speedboat version — the "traditional catamaran" tours take 90+ minutes each way and cut into your beach time. On a cruise-day schedule you need the fast boat.
Book Saona for your cruise day →Catalina Island is the alternative for cruise guests who want the beach-day experience but with more snorkeling than Saona. It's closer to La Romana (35 min speedboat), the reef right off the beach is genuinely spectacular ("The Wall" drops from 3 to 30 meters), and the beach itself is quieter than Saona in high season.
2026 price: from US$89 per person. Same cruise-window math as Saona — pickup 08:30, back to ship 15:30. Better pick than Saona if you're a snorkeler; slightly worse pick if you want the postcard sandbar photo.
Half-day buggy adventure is the top pick for cruise guests who don't want a beach day, or who want to double up (buggy morning + Saona afternoon is a stretch, but doable on longer port calls). From La Romana it's a 40-minute drive to the buggy launch; from Amber Cove there's an equivalent operation in the Puerto Plata countryside.
Route covers a sugarcane plantation, a Dominican cacao/coffee stop, a freshwater cenote for swimming, and Macao Beach (from Punta Cana side) or Playa Dorada (from Amber Cove side). Tour runs 3.5 hours door-to-door plus transfer — total 5 hours including pickup and drop. Fits comfortably inside any port call.
2026 price: from US$65 per person (shared 2-seater). Compare to US$119 through the ship.
If you're the "beaches are nice but I want to see something historic" traveler, the Santo Domingo city tour is the pick. It's a 90-minute drive from La Romana to the oldest European-founded city in the Americas — the Zona Colonial is UNESCO World Heritage, with Christopher Columbus's son's palace, the first cathedral in the Americas (1540), and cobblestone streets that feel more Seville than Caribbean.
Cruise-window math: 08:30 pickup, back to ship 16:30. Tight but works. Not recommended if your ship leaves before 17:00 — the drive back is on Autopista del Este and can slow down on Fridays. From Amber Cove, Santo Domingo is not a same-day option; the equivalent cultural pick from Amber Cove is Puerto Plata's historic center and Fort San Felipe.
Los 27 Charcos de Damajagua — the 27 waterfalls of Damajagua — is the signature adventure excursion from Amber Cove. 45-minute drive from the port, then a guided hike-and-swim up a river with waterfall jumps and natural water slides. You choose 7, 12 or all 27 waterfalls depending on fitness. This is one of the Caribbean's best-known adventure excursions and it's a genuine highlight.
Cruise-window math: 09:00 pickup, back to pier 15:00. Book direct with a local operator for around US$60–75 per person; the ship version runs US$99–129 for the same tour.
Note: minimum age 8, and you must be able to swim. Not appropriate if anyone in your party can't handle a 30-minute hike or short jumps into water.
For families of 6+ or groups splitting the cost, a private yacht half-day often works out cheaper per person than the ship's group excursion. You get a private boat, captain, snorkel stop, drinks, and the exact schedule that matches your all-aboard time — no risk of a group boat running late.
2026 pricing: from US$850 for a private catamaran half-day (up to 15 people) or US$1,400+ for a yacht. Best available for La Romana / Casa de Campo passengers; from Amber Cove the equivalent operates from nearby Sosúa.

Booking through the cruise line: convenient, "guaranteed" return to ship, and the excursion appears on your onboard account. But you'll pay 60–100% more per person, you'll be on a 40–120-passenger bus or boat, and you have zero flexibility on pickup time.
Booking direct with a licensed local operator: half the price, small-group (6–20 people), pickup right at the port terminal, and a direct WhatsApp line to your operator all day. The "risk" everyone talks about — missing the ship — is real but easily managed: any reputable operator (us included) guarantees a return time that beats the all-aboard whistle by at least 90 minutes, and carries a written commitment to cover taxi costs to the next port if a delay is our fault. Ask for that guarantee in writing before booking.
Our rule of thumb: book direct if your ship is docked 8+ hours, book through the ship if you're on a 5-hour port call in bad weather. Most Dominican port calls are the former.
La Romana: after clearing the ship's gangway you walk 4 minutes to the port exit; local operators wait outside the security barrier with named signs. Total time from ship to vehicle: ~15 minutes. Transfer to Bayahibe (for Saona/Catalina): 20 minutes.
Amber Cove: port is fully enclosed with a security perimeter; local operators wait at the designated pickup zone right outside the terminal exit. Total time from ship to vehicle: ~10 minutes.
Casa de Campo Marina: tender or dock arrival directly at the marina; pickup happens at the marina exit gate.
Every reputable operator will send you a pickup confirmation the day before with driver name, vehicle description, license plate and phone number. Save the number in WhatsApp before you disembark.
1. Booking a "full-day Saona" from La Romana on a 5-hour port call. Saona is a 7-hour excursion door-to-door. On short port calls (some Costa Mediterranean itineraries), take Catalina instead — 5 hours door-to-door, same beach-and-snorkel payoff.
2. Assuming Punta Cana is a same-day excursion from La Romana. Punta Cana city and beaches are 90 minutes each way — the transfer alone eats 3 hours of a port call. Save Punta Cana for a full land vacation.
