Why Macao is different from every other Punta Cana beach

Macao is public, undeveloped, and the only consistent surf beach on this stretch of coast. No mega-resort, no all-inclusive wristbands, no chair fees. Just a curving 800-meter bay, a few thatched restaurants on stilts, surf schools, and the cliffs at the north end. It's the beach that reminds you you're in the Caribbean, not at a resort pool.

How to get there

From Bávaro: 25 min taxi (~US$35 each way), 35 min if traffic in Punta Cana Village. From Cap Cana: 40 min taxi (~US$55). On a buggy tour the standard route ends here (see /blog/en/buggy-cenote-macao-combo). Public guagua exists but only locals use it.

What to do there

1. Surf lesson — Macao Surf Camp, US$45 for 90 min including board and rashguard. Beginner-friendly waves Nov–April.

2. Eat at one of the beach restaurants — fresh-caught fish + tostones, US$12–18 per plate. Pick the one with the most local customers, not the most tourists.

3. Walk to the cliff at the north end — 15 min along the sand, views over the next bay.

4. Cold coconut at the buggy stop — US$3.

5. Sunset (5:50–6:50 p.m. year-round) — Macao faces east-northeast; sunrise is the bigger show, but sunset on the cliffs is still excellent.

When to go

Best timing: arrive 9 a.m. for surf + coffee, leave by 11:30 a.m. before the buggy convoys arrive. The 12:00–14:00 window has 60+ buggies and is the worst time. Sunset visit is calm again.

What to combine it with

Pair with a buggy combo (see /blog/en/buggy-cenote-macao-combo), or a half-day chauffeur tour of the north coast (see /blog/en/luxury-car-rental-punta-cana-guide). Hidden-beach lovers should also read /blog/en/punta-cana-hidden-gems.
