Dominican Republic drug laws for tourists

The Dominican Republic enforces some of the strictest drug laws in the Caribbean. Tourists are not exempt from any provision and receive no special treatment from courts. This guide summarises the law as it actually applies to visitors — what substances are scheduled, what the penalties look like, how the airport and tourist-zone enforcement actually works, and where consular help ends. It is intended for trip planning and risk awareness, not to facilitate any illegal activity.

The governing law

Law 50-88 on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances is the controlling statute. It schedules cannabis, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, MDMA, LSD, ketamine, GHB, and various synthetic cannabinoids and opioids. THC products of any concentration (vapes, edibles, oils, flower) are treated as cannabis.

Popular adult experiences in Punta Cana

Travelers looking for a lively, legal way to socialise overwhelmingly choose boat-based experiences. The Party Boat in Punta Cana is a half-day catamaran sailing the Bávaro coast with music, an open bar of rum cocktails and beer, a snorkel stop on a shallow reef and a swim in the famous natural pool — joining strangers makes it easy to meet other couples and groups. The Private Party Boat is the same experience reserved for your crew only: choose your playlist, your departure time and your stops, with a captain, hostess and bartender included. Both options leave from Cabeza de Toro or Bávaro and are 100% legal, regulated and family- or stag-friendly depending on how you book.

How airport screening works

Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) screens arriving and departing checked and carry-on luggage with X-ray and K9 units. Customs forms ask about prohibited items; false declarations are themselves an offence. Random secondary screening is normal. Outbound screening also catches travelers who picked something up locally.

What enforcement looks like in tourist zones

DNCD operates plainclothes patrols on Bávaro Beach, in nightclubs (Coco Bongo, Oro, Imagine, Pacha), and around the main resort strips. Resort security cooperates with police on request and has no obligation to shield guests. Local 'dealers' approaching tourists are sometimes informants or undercover officers.

Looking for a social atmosphere?

Punta Cana's reputation is built on its sea, not its land. A catamaran cruise is where the holiday energy actually happens — open bar, sunshine, music, and a 30-person crowd that almost always becomes friends by the time you reach the natural pool. The Party Boat is the public shared cruise (best for solo travelers and couples who want to meet people); the Private Party Boat is the same product reserved for groups of 10 to 50. If you'd prefer a calmer vibe, a private catamaran or sunset cruise gives you the same view at a slower tempo. All boats are licensed, insured, and operated by local crews who know every cove on the Bávaro reef.

Penalties at a glance

Simple possession: 6 months – 2 years, fines from RD$30,000. Distribution: 3–10 years. Trafficking (over 1 kg cannabis or any commercial cocaine quantity): 5–30 years. Bail is possible but typically requires a Dominican lawyer and a travel restriction. The pre-trial process can take 2–6 weeks.

Consular help

Your embassy will be notified of any arrest, will visit you, and can provide a list of approved local lawyers. Embassies do not pay legal fees, do not intervene in court, and do not arrange release. For US, Canadian, UK, German, French, Italian, Russian and Brazilian citizens the State Department / Foreign Ministry processes are similar in outcome.

Practical risk reduction

Do not bring any controlled substance into the country. Do not accept anything from strangers in nightclubs. Do not buy from anyone offering on the beach. Do not store anything in resort rooms (housekeeping reports suspicious items). Plan your holiday around legal, regulated experiences.

Alternative experiences visitors enjoy

Beyond party boats, Punta Cana's most-booked adult experiences are Saona Island day trips (a catamaran-and-speedboat combo to a postcard sandbar with a buffet lunch and open bar), Catalina Island snorkel tours (smaller crowds, the best reef on this coast), sunset cruises from Cap Cana marina, and buggy or ATV adventures

Top-rated group activities

If you're traveling with a group — bachelor and bachelorette parties, birthdays, friends' trips, corporate retreats — the highest-rated bookings on cana.tours are the Private Party Boat, the Bachelor / Bachelorette Party Boat with decoration, sashes and surprise extras, and full-day private Saona or Catalina charters on a 50-foot catamaran. These are licensed, insured, fully crewed experiences with a single concierge handling logistics. Pricing scales per boat (not per person) which makes them surprisingly affordable for groups of 10+ compared to nightclub VIP tables.

FAQ

Domande frequenti

Are tourists treated differently than locals?+

Not under the law. In practice, foreigners often face the same charges with the additional friction of language barriers, bail logistics and embassy coordination.

What substances are most heavily enforced against?+

Cocaine first, cannabis second, MDMA third in tourist zones.

Is alcohol heavily regulated?+

No — drinking is legal at 18, alcohol is sold widely, and all-inclusive resorts and party boats serve open bar legally.

What is a low-risk legal alternative for a 'fun' afternoon?+

A Party Boat from Bávaro or Cabeza de Toro — half-day catamaran, open bar, music, snorkel and natural-pool swim.

Can my hotel help if I'm arrested?+

Hotels can contact your embassy on your behalf but will not intervene with police.
