Dominican Republic drug laws for tourists
The Dominican Republic enforces some of the strictest drug laws in the Caribbean. Tourists are not exempt from any provision and receive no special treatment from courts. This guide summarises the law as it actually applies to visitors — what substances are scheduled, what the penalties look like, how the airport and tourist-zone enforcement actually works, and where consular help ends. How airport screening works
Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) screens arriving and departing checked and carry-on luggage with X-ray and K9 units. Customs forms ask about prohibited items; false declarations are themselves an offence. Random secondary screening is normal. What enforcement looks like in tourist zones
DNCD operates plainclothes patrols on Bávaro Beach, in nightclubs (Coco Bongo, Oro, Imagine, Pacha), and around the main resort strips. Resort security cooperates with police on request and has no obligation to shield guests. Local 'dealers' approaching tourists are sometimes informants or undercover officers.

Punta Cana's reputation is built on its sea, not its land. Simple possession: 6 months – 2 years, fines from RD$30,000. Distribution: 3–10 years. Trafficking (over 1 kg cannabis or any commercial cocaine quantity): 5–30 years. Bail is possible but typically requires a Dominican lawyer and a travel restriction. The pre-trial process can take 2–6 weeks.
Consular help
Your embassy will be notified of any arrest, will visit you, and can provide a list of approved local lawyers. Embassies do not pay legal fees, do not intervene in court, and do not arrange release. For US, Canadian, UK, German, French, Italian, Russian and Brazilian citizens the State Department / Foreign Ministry processes are similar in outcome.
Practical risk reduction
Do not bring any controlled substance into the country. Do not accept anything from strangers in nightclubs. Do not buy from anyone offering on the beach. Do not store anything in resort rooms (housekeeping reports suspicious items). Plan your holiday around legal, regulated experiences.
