Punta Cana FAQ

Do you tip tour guides in Punta Cana?

Yes, tipping tour guides in Punta Cana is customary but not mandatory. The standard tip is 10% of the tour price, or USD 5–10 per person for group excursions and USD 20–40 per couple for private tours. Most guides live primarily off tips and won't ask, but will visibly appreciate it.

How much to tip

Group excursion (Saona, catamaran, buggy): USD 5–10 per person. Private tour: 10–15% of the total tour price, or USD 20–40 per couple. Driver-only transfer: USD 5–10 per ride. Bar staff on a catamaran: USD 1–2 per drink or USD 10 at the end.

When NOT to tip extra

If your tour invoice already lists 'gratuity included' or '10% service charge' — that's the tip and it goes to staff. You can still add USD 5 if service was excellent. Never tip if the experience was unsafe or guide was rude; tell us instead and we'll handle it.

Currency and form

USD cash is preferred (Dominican pesos also fine). Card tipping isn't really a thing here — most guides don't see it. Carry small bills: USD 1, 5, 10. Tipping in EUR or GBP is awkward; convert at the resort if needed.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I tip the driver AND the guide?+

Yes, separately. Driver gets USD 5–10 at drop-off; guide gets the main tip at end of tour. They often split bar tips with crew.

Is tipping mandatory?+

Legally no. Culturally yes for tourism workers. Minimum wage in DR is around USD 250/month — tips often double or triple income for guides.

Should I tip on a free tour or upgrade?+

Yes, especially then. The model relies on tips — USD 10–20 per person is standard.

What if I had a bad experience?+

Don't tip and message us within 24 hours. We refund the tour or part of it if a complaint is valid.
