Local expert notes
Catalina is the quieter cousin of Saona — smaller island, better coral, fewer crowds. It leaves from Bayahibe (about a 90-minute transfer from Bávaro/Punta Cana hotels, so plan for a 6:30 AM pickup) and delivers what Saona sometimes doesn't: real snorkeling. The wall reef drops from 3m to 30m within meters of shore and has some of the healthiest coral left on the DR coast. You get two snorkel stops, beach time on Catalina, and a Dominican buffet lunch. It's the excursion we recommend for anyone who's already done Saona on a previous trip and wants the upgraded, less-touristy version.
