What a Saona day actually looks like

All Saona day trips depart from Bayahibe — that's a 90-minute van ride from Bávaro and 60 min from Cap Cana, both included in the price. Standard mix is catamaran out (2 h with open bar and music), 1 h at the famous natural pool (waist-deep starfish lagoon mid-channel), then 30 min speedboat dash to Mano Juan beach for buffet lunch and 2 h of free beach time, then speedboat back to Bayahibe and van home. Total door-to-door: 11–12 hours.

Price, inclusions, and what the resort desk hides

Direct price 2026: $95/adult, $50/child (4–12), under-4 free. Includes: hotel pickup + return, catamaran + speedboat + van, bilingual guide, buffet lunch on the island (chicken, fish, rice, salad, fruit, soft drinks), open bar on the catamaran (rum, beer, soft drinks), national park entry fee ($25/p), life jackets and snorkel masks. The resort tour-desk version of the exact same product is $130–160 — that delta is pure commission.

Best version of Saona for you

Mixed group (couples + families): the standard catamaran+speedboat combo wins. Couples/honeymoon: ask for the smaller catamaran (20 pax cap instead of 40) for $115/p. Group of 6+ with budget: a private speedboat charter for the day runs $1,200 and is significantly more comfortable than the shared boats.

FAQ

Common questions

Where does the Saona day actually start from?+

All Saona tours leave from Bayahibe (60–90 min west of Punta Cana). Boats cannot depart from Bávaro or Cap Cana directly — the open water on that side is too rough. Pickup from your hotel is included in the price.

What is the 'natural pool' on Saona Island?+

A shallow waist-deep sandbar 1.5 km offshore from Mano Juan beach where you can stand, walk, and see live starfish. Water is clear and the bottom is sand only. The boats anchor for 45–60 minutes here.

Is Saona crowded?+

Mano Juan beach hosts 600–1,200 people on peak winter Saturdays across multiple boats; Wednesdays and Thursdays are noticeably quieter. The island itself is 110 km² — the crowd is concentrated on one beach, the rest is empty mangrove.

Is Saona Island good for kids?+

Excellent for 4–10. The natural pool is the safest sea-water experience in the country (waist-deep, no current). The catamaran has shade and bathrooms. Bring water shoes for the rocky boarding dock at Bayahibe.

What should I bring to Saona?+

Reef-safe sunscreen (the captain enforces a no-spray-aerosol rule), swimsuit worn, towel, $20–40 USD cash for tips and souvenirs, dry top for the speedboat ride back, waterproof phone pouch. Skip the GoPro accessories — the catamaran lockers don't lock.

Saona vs Catalina — which one?+

Saona for the postcard natural pool and beach experience with kids. Catalina for snorkeling and reef life right off the beach. See our Saona vs Catalina guide for the full breakdown.

Can I do a private Saona trip?+

Yes. Private speedboat for up to 10 pax is $1,200 for the day (works out to $120/p for a full boat), private catamaran 20 pax is $2,800. Both let you pick the departure time and the exact route.

Is Saona safe?+

Yes — it's a national park, all operators are licensed by the Dominican Navy, life jackets are mandatory on the speedboats, and every boat has a radio and first-aid kit. Sea conditions are calmest 8 am–noon, which is why all tours depart early.
