Resorts and Politur use the international beach-flag system: green = safe, yellow = caution (medium surf or current), red = no swim, double-red = beach closed. Inside the reef-protected Bávaro/Punta Cana lagoon, the flag is green ~95% of days. Macao (no reef) flips to yellow Dec–March (winter swell). Sargassum (free-floating brown algae) lands in pulses May–Oct, removed daily on Blue Flag beaches.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to swim with kids?+
Yes — inside the barrier reef (Bávaro, Cabeza de Toro, Cap Cana), waist-deep water with minimal current. Always check the flag and stay between flagged buoys.
When does sargassum land?+
Pulses arrive May–October, driven by Atlantic currents. Blue Flag beaches remove it daily. The reef-protected stretch from Cabeza de Toro to Cap Cana is least affected.
