Safety-first excursion guide

The safest excursions in Punta Cana

After 6 years and 30,000+ guests, the excursions we'd recommend for a safety-conscious traveler are the ones with vetted boats, certified guides, life-vest discipline, and a real insurance trail. Here are the five we trust, ranked by risk profile, plus the two we no longer sell.

Our safest excursion shortlist

1. Saona Island catamaran — calm sheltered channel, USCG-rated vessels, max 35 per boat, all in life vests during transfer. 2. Catalina Island snorkel — coral-wall snorkel with PADI dive masters, certified rescue swimmer on board. 3. Cabeza de Toro catamaran cruise

What we check before recommending

All operators we sell carry Dominican civil-liability insurance (póliza de responsabilidad civil), captains hold STCW + Caribbean Maritime Authority licenses, boats have <2-year hull inspection certificates, life vests are CE/USCG within 5-year service date, and first-aid kits are restocked monthly. We audit twice a year — the receipts and policies are filed in our Bávaro office.

Excursions we removed from our list

We no longer sell unregulated speedboat-only Saona tours (overloaded boats, no manifest), nor any off-road buggy operator without dedicated mechanic support — both have been linked to serious incidents on the coast. Our buggy partner runs guided convoys with a chase vehicle.

FAQ

Common questions

Is Punta Cana safe for excursions?+

Yes when you book through a vetted operator. Resort-desk and street-vendor tours have a much higher incident rate than curated bookings.

Are catamarans safe in winter?+

Yes. Peak-season winds (15–25 km/h) are well within design limits for our 50-ft catamarans. We cancel and refund free if marine authority closes the channel.

Do buggy tours have age limits?+

Yes — driver minimum 18 with valid license, passenger minimum 8. Children under 8 ride only in the support van.

What's the safest excursion for non-swimmers?+

Macao horseback riding or Scape Park's zipline circuit — both are land-based and don't require swimming.
