Best time to visit Saona Island

The sweet spot for Saona is mid-December to mid-April: dry, low humidity, sea around 26–27 °C, and the natural starfish pools at their clearest. May–August stays beautiful with brief afternoon showers; September–October is the rainy/hurricane window when day trips sometimes cancel last-minute.

Month by month

Dec–Apr: peak season, calm water, every operator runs daily — book 48 h ahead. May–Aug: warmer (29 °C sea), short rain bursts, 10–15% cheaper, smaller groups. Sep–Oct: highest cancellation risk; we'll rebook free if weather closes the channel. Nov: shoulder season, often the best value — water clears up after the rains.

Time of day

Our speedboats leave Bayahibe around 8:30 a.m. and reach Palmilla Natural Pool (the starfish sandbar) by 10:00 a.m. — before the mass arrivals. The two hours before noon offer glass-clear water and the best starfish photos. We always depart in the morning to maximize time at all 4 stops.

Avoid these dates

Christmas week and Easter week are the only times we'd warn about: Saona gets crowded, prices spike 20–30%, and the natural pools lose their Instagram look. If you're flexible, shift one week either side.

Yes. Tours run 364 days a year (closed Christmas Day). Bad-weather cancellations get rebooked free.

When is the water clearest?+

January–April mornings. Visibility drops slightly after heavy October rain but recovers within a week.

What about hurricane season?+

Officially June–November, but direct hits are rare. September–October is the only window we'd insure against — buy travel insurance and keep one flex day.

Cheapest month to visit?+

May, June and November. Same tour, ~15% lower price, half the crowds at the natural pools.
