Punta Cana FAQ

Is it safe to leave the resort in Punta Cana?

Yes, leaving your resort in Punta Cana is generally safe — the main tourist corridor (Bávaro, Cabeza de Toro, Cap Cana, Uvero Alto) is patrolled by the tourist police (CESTUR). Use registered taxis or pre-booked drivers, avoid ATMs at night, and skip unmarked side streets. Day trips, restaurants and shopping are perfectly safe.

Where it's safe to go

Very safe day & night: Bávaro Beach, Cap Cana, Downtown Mall, Blue Mall, Coco Bongo, Hard Rock Casino. Safe by day: Los Corales / El Cortecito, Higüey town, Macao Beach. Use a guide: anywhere off the tourist corridor, including Verón market or Friusa area.

How to stay safe

Book transport ahead (we send a vetted driver). Avoid hailing street taxis at night. Don't flash cash or jewellery. Keep your passport in the room safe — bring a copy. ATMs: use the ones inside Blue Mall or Downtown Mall, not standalone street machines.

Real risk vs. perception

The U.S. State Dept lists DR at Level 2 ('exercise increased caution') — same as France or Italy. Violent crime against tourists in Punta Cana is rare. Petty theft (unattended phone on the beach, hotel-room theft from unsafe-stored valuables) is the main concern.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I walk on the beach at night?+

On resort beach, yes. Off-resort beach (Los Corales), only in groups before midnight.

Are taxis safe?+

Yes if pre-booked or marked SindiTaxi. Avoid unmarked cars offering rides at the airport or outside malls.

Is it safe to drive a rental car?+

Yes during the day, but roads are aggressive. We never recommend night driving outside the main corridor — accidents and police roadblocks are common.

What about Higüey or Santo Domingo?+

Day trips with a guide are safe. Don't go alone after dark to neighbourhoods you don't know.
