A missing passport changes your departure plan, but the next steps can be organised. Start with your nationality, your actual location and your flight itinerary—not a promise that any replacement paper will get you home.
First, establish what is missing and when you travel
If you are in immediate danger or need urgent assistance, prioritise that over paperwork. Our general local emergency contacts provide a starting point for urgent help. Otherwise, write down your nationality, present accommodation, reachable phone or email, passport details if available and the complete return itinerary, including connections.
Keep the airline booking reference and departure date accessible. A flight tomorrow requires prompt contact with the appropriate consular service, but does not create a guaranteed overnight document service. Ask a trusted person or reception to help organise communications if you are overwhelmed; an operator cannot issue a passport or decide whether an airline will carry you.
A targeted search is different from an official report
Check the room safe, document wallet and the place where the passport was last handled. Contact the relevant reception, transfer provider or excursion operator with time, location and a brief description. If it may have been left in an airport or aircraft, contact the airport’s official lost-property service or the airline as appropriate. Airline baggage problems and personal lost property are different cases.
Do not delay urgent official contact while waiting for every search reply. Reporting a document lost to its issuing authority can affect its validity; ask what applies before assuming a later discovery reverses the report. Do not use an officially reported passport again without authoritative confirmation. A vendor offering to “reactivate” it is not the issuing authority.
Who handles the loss, theft and replacement?
Contact the official consular service for your nationality and explain that you are currently in the Dominican Republic. Establish which office handles your case, whether an appointment or personal attendance is needed and how to report the loss to the issuing authority. The process for one nationality cannot be applied to everyone reading this English page.
For theft, seek local police assistance and ask the consular service which report or reference it requires. Police document the incident; they do not issue your national passport. A hotel receptionist, travel agent or honorary representative may help direct you, but do not assume every contact can issue emergency documents. Confirm the competent office before travelling to it.
Prepare evidence, but use the actual application checklist
Gather any passport scan or number, other identification, booking confirmations, proof of your current address and a short factual account of where and when the document disappeared. Ask the responsible authority for its exact application forms, photograph specifications, payment arrangements and required originals. These are preparation categories, not a universal mandatory list.
For a child, immediately mention the child’s nationality, age and who is accompanying them. Consent, guardianship and identity evidence can require additional steps. Do not infer requirements from an adult application. Our guide to ordinary passport and entry preparation covers the pre-trip context; a missing-document case needs its own official instructions.
Your return flight and connections must be checked separately
A passport photocopy, police report or Dominican E-Ticket does not automatically authorise international travel. An emergency passport or travel document can have restrictions relating to route, destination or validity. Ask the issuing service what it can provide, then confirm acceptance for the exact journey with the operating airline and relevant transit or destination authorities.
Changing to a connection through another country may create a new document or transit requirement. Do not buy a replacement route just because the ticket is available. Give the airline the proposed document type rather than simply asking whether “a replacement” works. An airline’s response does not replace a country’s entry rules, and an appointment confirmation is not an issued document.
If an appointment outside Punta Cana is required
First confirm the office address, appointment, required documents and whether everyone concerned must attend. Only then arrange transport and any overnight accommodation. Do not assume the relevant service is at Punta Cana Airport or that a same-day trip will match both an appointment and an international departure.
The guide to getting around during your stay helps with transport planning once the destination is known. Tell your accommodation if your checkout plans may change. Ask your insurer or assistance provider what support your policy covers, keeping receipts and written replies; do not assume document replacement, extra nights or missed flights are automatically reimbursed.
If your phone or wallet is also missing
Use a trusted device or reception assistance to reach your own bank, mobile provider, airline and consular service through their verified channels. Ask the appropriate provider about blocking affected cards or securing accounts. Do not send passport scans, passwords or security codes to an unknown “helper” promising a faster replacement.
Keep a safe way for the authority and airline to contact you, and write down case references. Our practical money and payment guide explains the wider payment context, not a guarantee of emergency funds. A companion’s assistance can help with logistics, but the required identity checks still belong to the responsible institutions.
Rebuild your departure plan after document confirmation
Once the document and permitted route are confirmed, coordinate the flight, accommodation and ride to the airport. Use the guide to organising departure day for the remaining timing and luggage arrangements. If the original passport is found, tell the issuing authority and follow its instructions; possession alone does not establish validity after a report.
For future travel, the complete travel packing checklist includes document preparation. Keep copies securely and separately from originals. This guide explains the practical sequence; the competent authorities decide your case. Do not assume so. A copy may help establish identity, but it is not automatically an accepted international travel document. Confirm the required document and exact route.
