You just landed at PUJ, it's 30 °C, and twenty people are offering you a ride. Here is exactly how the arrival works, what each option really costs, and how to reach your hotel without stress or surprises.
For nine out of ten travelers: pre-book a private transfer. Your driver waits at arrivals with your name on a sign, the price was fixed in writing before you left home, and you are at your hotel pool while the shuttle passengers are still counting hotel stops. That is the whole secret.
Taxi and shuttle are not "wrong" — they just cost you either money (taxi rank) or time (shared shuttle) at the exact moment of your trip when you have the least patience for both. Below is the honest comparison, with the real 2026 numbers we charge and see every day.

See real transfer prices by zone →1. Immigration. Have your passport and your completed Dominican Republic E-Ticket QR code ready — it is one combined entry/exit form and it is free. On a January Saturday, the immigration hall can take 45+ minutes; on a Tuesday in May, ten.
2. Luggage and customs. Straightforward. Bags arrive quickly by Caribbean standards, and customs for tourists is a walk-through unless you are flagged.
3. The gauntlet. The moment you exit customs you walk through a corridor of timeshare reps and "free shuttle" offers. They are friendly, they are not dangerous, and they are not free — the ride comes with a sales presentation attached. A polite "no gracias, tengo transporte" and steady walking is the entire technique.
4. The exit doors. Outside, in the heat: the official taxi rank, tour buses, and — if you pre-booked — a driver holding your name. That sign is the cheapest luxury in Caribbean travel.
If long immigration lines genuinely bother you, there is a paid VIP fast-track service that walks you through a priority lane with a porter. Worth it on peak-season Saturdays, unnecessary most Tuesdays.
Pre-booked private transfer. Fixed price in writing before you fly, flight-tracked (the driver waits free if you are delayed), name sign at arrivals, air-conditioned SUV or van, child seats on request, pay cash USD/EUR/DOP or card. Airport taxi rank. Safe, licensed, official — and roughly 40–60% more expensive than the same route pre-booked ($40–50 to Bávaro, $80–95 to Uvero Alto). Mostly cash. There is no written price, so your negotiating position after a ten-hour flight is exactly as weak as it sounds.
Shared shuttle. $15–25 per person, but the bus waits to fill and then makes three to seven hotel stops. A 25-minute ride to Bávaro can become a two-hour tour of other people's resorts. Fine for solo backpackers; rough for families at the end of a travel day.
Resort "included" transfer. Read the fine print: included almost always means the shared shuttle above, sometimes departing only when half full. A few top-end resorts include true private transfers — confirm with your concierge in writing.

All prices are per vehicle, fixed in advance, including tolls — and the same numbers apply on the way back. Round trips booked together are the easiest money you will save on this trip.
The "free shuttle". Nothing at the airport is free. The complimentary ride is attached to a timeshare presentation that will eat half a vacation day.

The change trick. "Sorry, no change" for your $50 bill. Carry small USD notes for tips and incidentals — our money guide lists exactly which denominations to bring.
Booking nothing at all. The most expensive transfer decision is the one you make standing on the curb at 2 p.m. in the sun, with luggage, after nine hours of travel. Decide at home, not at the curb.
Car seats: not standard in taxis or shuttles. With a pre-booked transfer you request them in advance and they are simply installed when you arrive — say the children's ages when booking.
Groups of 4+: four adults with suitcases do not fit in a sedan. Book a van ($55–89 depending on zone) and the per-person price drops below the shuttle, with none of the stops.
Late-night and early-morning arrivals: pre-booked drivers track your flight and wait — the rank and the shuttles do not run on your schedule.
Wheelchair access: mention it when booking; vans with ramps need to be scheduled, not hailed.
